What's Happening Mount Eagle March 22, 2025

Grade 6 students visited Audi Field and learned about sports management careers and economics.

A Message from Ms. Kirkland

Welcome Spring!  This week our Grade 6 students traveled into DC to visit Audi Field.  They learned about various careers in sports management and entertainment, as well as basic economic principals that drive financial decisions in an organization. What an exciting opportunity!

We have another full week of school next week, and then students will have a long weekend. Monday, March 31 is a holiday for everyone. Schools and office will be closed. On Tuesday, April 1, teachers will be in the building working on progress reports and collaborating.  Students will return to begin the fourth and final quarter of the 2024-25 school year on April 2!

I can't believe the final quarter is right around the corner.  Your children have learned and grown so much this year, and I am so proud to see all they have accomplished. With the fourth quarter comes many assessments.  In the coming weeks, we will share SOL testing schedules as well as other testing dates. We ask that you make every effort to avoid appointments and absences on these days. Your support is much appreciated!

As always, thank you for your partnership.

🍎 Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance

As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar(link is external) and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.

🤧 Protect Yourself and Your Community From the Flu

Fairfax County is experiencing very high levels of influenza (flu) illness. The Fairfax County Health Department reports that visits to emergency departments and urgent care centers for flu-like illness have increased, especially among children, and multiple flu outbreaks have occurred in our community and school settings. Read a letter from the health department(link is external)

The health department suggests taking the following steps to reduce the spread of flu and other germs:

  • Cover coughs and sneezes. If you must be around others while ill, wearing a mask can help reduce spread.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers when soap and water are not available (with supervision for younger children).
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces.

According to the health department, to help prevent or reduce the spread of illness it is important for individuals who are sick to stay home and away from others until symptoms improve and until they have been free of fever for at least 24 hours. Visit this Attendance webpage(link is external) for guidance on when your child should go to school.

What's Happening Mount Eagle February 22, 2025

Ms. Reidy and Ms. Guerrero lead Morning Meeting together in Ms. Guerrero's Grade 1 classroom.  At Mount Eagle, teachers co-teach to provide supports to all students.

A Message from Ms. Kirkland

I'm so excited to share that this Saturday, Mount Eagle will be sending it's first group of students to represent our school at the Science Olympiad competition at Fairfax High School!  These Grade 6 students have been studying and practicing after school for weeks, and we know that they will represent us well.  We are so proud of them!

The last few weeks have been filled with weather and holidays. While we have enjoyed our recent snow days and holidays, we are ready for a return to consistent school routines. We are hoping for uninterrupted school weeks in these months ahead! Please continue to be our steadfast educational partners in sending your students to school on time daily. We need your help with supporting higher daily school attendance rates at Mount Eagle.

While we do know the winter season also aligns with cold and flu season, please know that students are able to attend school unless they have a fever, are vomiting or experiencing persistent tummy troubles. Our kids learn so much daily at school and we love when our entire school community is here together!

As always, thank you for your partnership.

The Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3-12 in March. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop the skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE(link is external) and mailed to families who do not have a ParentVUE account. For more information, including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener(link is external) webpage.

What's Happening Mount Eagle February 14, 2025

Ms. Samms-England meets with some of her fourth grade students in a small group during math workshop.

A Message from Ms. Kirkland

The groundhog warned us. Winter is not over, even though we might be wishing it away.  Thank you to all the families who rearranged schedules to ensure students got home safely on Tuesday during the early release.  We happy to share that all staff and students were able to get home safely before road conditions became unsafe. Thank you for also continuing to send your children to school on days that are impacted by changes in schedule.  Regular attendance, even on short days, makes a big difference in your child's learning.

On Thursday morning, I greeted students coming back from the snow day on Wednesday.  I asked them how they enjoyed their snow day, and student after student shared mixed feelings about the day.  While the snow was fun, most students shared that they missed school and were ready to be with their friends and teachers.

This coming Monday is a holiday, and the building will be closed for staff and students. We are crossing fingers that the weather will cooperate, and we will have four full days of learning next week. We are all hopeful and excited for a regular routine.

As always, thank you for your partnership.

This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

FCPS Budget The Budge Breakdown

More than 85% of the budget is dedicated to instruction and reflects the needs of our community’s young people in response to the changing world around us. Budget priorities include providing competitive compensation for all employees, including a 7% salary increase for all staff. The majority of the budget increase is dedicated to that proposed 7% pay increase.

Our families want their children in high-quality schools with the best teachers who provide rigorous academic experiences. We must provide competitive compensation to attract and retain our outstanding educators, administrators, and other school-based and operational staff dedicated to the success of our students.

The proposed 7% salary increase would likely move FCPS to the highest starting salary for teachers with a master's degree among our neighboring counties and greatly improve our recruitment efforts amidst an ongoing teacher shortage. Visit the Budget webpage(link is external) for more information.

The Budget Process

The Fairfax County School Board discussed the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Proposed Budget at their work session(link is external) on February 4. They discussed details regarding(link is external) student enrollment and investments in students requiring additional support, market comparison data for surrounding school divisions, and an update on progress toward achieving the Baldrige Award for Performance Excellence. Baldrige is a framework used to assess and improve organizational performance across various sectors, including education.

The School Board also held a public hearing(link is external) on the FY 2026 Proposed Budget on Tuesday, February 4, where they invited the community to share their feedback on the budget.

On Tuesday, February 18, the Fairfax County executive will present the county’s Advertised Budget, and the Fairfax County School Board will hold a work session on the FCPS FY 2026 Proposed Budget. View FCPS’ Budget Development Calendar(link is external).

What's Happening Mount Eagle February 7, 2025

Kindergarten students collected data around who they predict will win the Super Bowl this weekend!

A Message from Ms. Kirkland

Even though temperatures are dropping again, it's been warm inside Mount Eagle with all the busy students learning and working.  Across our teams, we are reviewing the data collected during our midyear assessments and using this information to adjust instruction and support our students' growth.

Next week, we have two grade levels who will be taking their learning out into the community!  Kindergarten will be going to the Postal Museum to learn all about how our mail gets from one place to another and to learn about important jobs in our communities. Grade 5 students will be going to the National Air and Space Museum and will get a unique view of our universe at the planetarium.  Both of these trips are made possible through the fundraising our PTO leads every year.  Our PTO is committed to ensuring that every grade level has a funded field trip every year, so that every student has access to the amazing learning opportunities in our community.

We are excited to continue another great week of learning next week. As always, thank you for your partnership with us in your child's education at Mount Eagle.

📈 Virginia’s Student Assessment Summary for Families

This month, families of students who took any Standards of Learning (SOL) test between school years 2015-16 and 2023-24 will receive a Student Assessment Summary Report(link is external). The report shows a student’s state percentile ranking for each test. This allows families to see how their child ranked compared to all Virginia students who took the same test that year.

Reports are available now in SIS ParentVUE Documents. They will be distributed by schools this month to students whose families do not have ParentVUE access. Learn how to access ParentVUE(link is external)

The report is intended to help families reflect on how their child performed across all tested subjects over the years. Our schools and staff are committed to working with families to support every student to succeed at their highest potential. Learn more about student assessments in FCPS(link is external).

Students in Ms. Chykirda's class gather for the first Morning Meeting of 2025!

What's Happening Mount Eagle January 10, 2025 A Message from Ms. Kirkland

We were so happy to welcome your children back to Mount Eagle today! Our custodial team worked tirelessly over the last few days to ensure that our staff, students, and families could access the school safely.  With many hours of shoveling, salting, and sweeping, we were ready!  We are so grateful to them, and to our entire community for their patience.

January will mark the final weeks of the second quarter of school.  We are nearly halfway through the year already!  Daily attendance will continue to be important, especially with the changes in weather and schedules.  Please continue to plan vacations and trips during schedule FCPS holidays so that we can ensure your children are learning every day we are here.

Finally, I'm seeing a little snowflake for this weekend.  Please continue to keep an eye on the weather and make sure we have your most up-to-date contact information so we can keep you informed of scheduled changes and closings.  Crossing fingers this next storm has a much smaller impact!

Have a fabulous weekend, Mount Eagle!

Grade 6 students dress in matching outfits for Twin/Trio Day in December.

What's Happening Mount Eagle January 3, 2025 A Message from Ms. Kirkland

Happy New Year to everyone in the Mount Eagle community! I hope that you and your family found time to connect with loved ones. Our custodial team was busy over the break with deep cleaning and preparing for the return of students this coming Monday.

As I write this, that snowflake icon keeps peeking in and out on my weather app. We know that the weather in this area can change rapidly, so please stay tuned for all weather alerts from FCPS. When a 2-hour delayed opening is announced, students may begin arriving no earlier than 10:25am. Please do not drop off students before that as there is no supervision.

Please take some time this weekend to make sure that you have all of your winter weather clothing ready to go for the return to school.  We go outside for recess unless we received word that wind chills are at dangerous levels or the play area is snow or ice-covered. We want to make sure children are able to play outside comfortably, so make sure hats, coats and gloves go to school with your child.

As always, thank you for your partnership with us in your child's education at Mount Eagle. We can't wait to welcome you back soon!

Our school social work, Ms. Shannon, and our Family Liaison, Ms. Del Campo helped coordinate many donations to support families ahead of the winter break! See information below for more information about resources you can access over the break.

🍲 Food Assistance and Resource Guide

Food insecurity impacts more than 96,000 Fairfax County residents. There are many resources available to support those who need food assistance. Learn how to help these families and the many resources available to support those who need food assistance on Fairfax County’s website(link is external) or view the county’s Human Services Resource Guide(link is external).

⛄Student and Family Assistance During Break

Fairfax County Public Schools has compiled a list of resources for students and families in case they need assistance while schools are closed for winter break. Please visit FCPS’ winter resources webpage(link is external) for information on academic support, mental health support, and county resources related to food, clothing, housing, and other needs.

Boundary Review

As a reminder, FCPS has started the process of reviewing school boundaries across the division. This important work will help the district better support student population growth, changes in school capacity, and evolving community needs. Community input is vital to this process. With that in mind, FCPS, in partnership with Thru Consulting, will be hosting a series of community meetings in each of FCPS’ six regions. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and learn more about the boundary review process.

Please visit FCPS’ website for meeting dates, locations, and other information(link is external). Sign up for the School Boundary Review newsletter(link is external) for updates.

📖 Advanced Academics Screening

Families with students in grades 2-6 that may be interested in referring their child for full time advanced academic services for the 2024-25 school year should complete a referral by the deadline of Dec. 15, 2024.

For more information on full time AAP continuum of services please refer to the AAP website: https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs(link is external)

Referral forms and the optional parent questionnaire may be found through this link: https://www.fcps.edu/academics/advanced-academic-programs-aap/forms-advanced-academic-program-aap(link is external)

What are full time advanced academic services?

  • In grades 3-8, some advanced learners need a full-time advanced academic program with rigorous, differentiated instruction in all four core content areas (Language Arts, mathematics, social studies, and science) and students are clustered on a full-time basis.
  • All decisions regarding full-time placement in Full-Time AAP program are made through a central screening committee of educators from across FCPS.. Full-Time services continue through Grade 8 and students do not need to be evaluated each year.

Eligibility decisions will be sent April 3-4

If you have any questions about screening and the continuum of services please contact Jacqui Greene, Advanced Academic Resource Teacher at jcgreene@fcps.edu(link sends email)

⏰ Update on Potential Changes to Middle School Start Times

At Tuesday’s School Board work session, staff from Prismatic Services, Inc., presented options for adjusting start times at FCPS middle schools. As a reminder, Prismatic is charged with developing an action plan to help the School Board reach its goal of starting middle school at or after 8 a.m.

The presentation includes five options for adjusting middle school start times(link is external) based on the consultant’s analysis from community forums, surveys, and interviews with staff, parents, associations, and other groups. The School Board will provide next steps to the superintendent.

What's Happening Mount Eagle December 6, 2024 A Message from Ms. Kirkland

I can't believe that December is already here!  There are only two more weeks left until the winter break, and they will be packed with lots of learning and fun. Many units will finish up in these next two weeks.  Thank you in advance for reserving time for trips and time off for the break to ensure your children have access to this learning.

Earlier this week, one of our school board members, Mateo Dunne, met with our PTO to share information about FCPS boundary review process.  This is a big process that involves hearing from all stakeholders about how we proceed to ensure efficient and equitable access to facilities and programs across our division.  There are many opportunities for parents to learn more and to share feedback.  Please make sure you check out more details in the Boundary Review article in this newsletter.

In just two weeks, we will gather for an annual Mount Eagle tradition for our Winter Sing-a-Long.  We will be cozy in our pajamas as we gather to sing holiday tunes together.  Families are welcome to join us, and we have a system for parents who might want to sign their children out afterwards.  More details can be found below.

As always, thank you for all you do to support our school community. Have a fabulous weekend, Mount Eagle!

Kate Kirkland

Principal

Winter Sing-a-Long

Our Mount Eagle Winter concert is Friday, December 20 at 2:00pm.  If you wish to take your student(s) home immediately after the concert you will need to complete this form for each student.  The office will prepare a pink pass and have it ready for you to pick up on your way into the concert.  That pass will provide you and your student access to their classroom to retrieve their items.  Please leave the pink pass with the teacher.
