Student Dress

Students are expected to dress appropriately for the educational environment. Clothing which interferes with or disrupts this environment is unacceptable. FCPS Regulation 2613.3 outlines appropriate dress for school including what items are not allowed.

Shoes:

Students should wear appropriate closed-toe shoes for PE and playing on the playground. "Slides" or flipflops are not safe for PE and recess.

Hoodies:

We recognize that wearing a hoodie jacket is popular among many students. There are places where wearing a hoodie "up" is acceptable and where it's not because of safety reasons:

Where students may wear their hoodie up:

  • Outside during recess, arrival & dismissal
  • In the classroom with teacher permission. Each teacher will work with students to establish expectations for their classroom.

Where students may NOT wear their hoodie up because it prevents others from recognizing them at a distance:

  • In hallways & stairwells
  • In the library
  • In the cafeteria
  • In the gym

Wearing a hat is acceptable as long as it does not interfere with the learning environment.

Cold weather:

We go out for recess everyday unless it is raining or the playground is unsafe because of snow/ice. Students go outside even when the temperature is below 32 degrees. Please make sure you check the weather report and help your child dress for the weather.

Please talk with your child about remembering to pick up their jackets, hats, etc from the playground. Label your child’s items and check that they come home with all their belongings.
